Coffins & Caskets: Choosing The Right Option For You

Choosing a coffin or a casket for your loved one can be a useful part of the grieving process, as well as being an essential part of funeral planning. This time can be extremely emotionally challenging for anybody who is going through grief. Our guide is here to help you differentiate between coffins and caskets, so that you can make the most informed choice. To learn more, keep on reading.

Coffins & Caskets: What’s The Real Difference?

Coffins and caskets may seem pretty similar, but there are a few key differences to be aware of before you make your decision.

Caskets are typically more rectangular in shape, as opposed to coffins, which are tapered. Coffins take a wider shape at the shoulders and become tapered towards the foot, however a casket is rectangular all the way through. Because of this slight difference in shape, coffins will usually have 6 sides to them and caskets have 4.

Aside from the differences in design, one of the biggest differences between these two items is that coffins are typically made for burial purposes. Caskets on the other hand, are designed for funerals and they can be made from wood, metal or fibreglass.

Choosing A Coffin Or A Casket: Things To Consider

Before you go ahead and choose your coffin or casket, there are a few key things to consider so that you can make the best possible choice.

Burial Or Cremation

Knowing if there is going to be a burial or a cremation can help massively with your choice. If your loved one is being cremated, there may be specific materials that cannot be used because of the emissions. Additionally, if you opt for a burial service, there may be size restrictions or material restrictions on the coffin.

The material of your coffin or casket can also make a difference in your decision. Solid wood tends to be more expensive, but wood veneer options are more affordable. You can also have metal or fibreglass designs.

If you opt for an eco-friendly funeral, your coffin or casket can be made from a range of sustainable materials, such as:

  • Wicker
  • Bamboo
  • Seagrass
  • Banana leaf

As we’ve already mentioned, there may be some restrictions regarding the dimensions of your coffin or casket, so be sure to double check this before you make your choice. If you feel uncertain about the size of your coffin, one of our funeral professionals will be happy to discuss this with you.
