Grief During the Holidays: Remembering Your Loved One

The holidays can be hard for many people, especially if you’ve lost a loved one. However, the holidays can be a great time to honour and remember your loved ones that have passed. Grief doesn’t end after you’ve had the funeral service. Rather than letting the holidays trigger your grief, through movies, parties, songs and events, why not use these emotions to keep your loved one’s memory alive?

Here are some ways to remember your loved one this year.

Photos and home videos

There’s no better time to reminisce than over the holidays. Family and friends will be coming and going and it’s a great time to look through photos and videos together and talk about memories you have. You may even hear some new stories about your loved one you’d never heard before. Leave out photo albums on the coffee table or play home videos on Christmas morning. It will be great to remember all the fond memories you all have.

Donate to a cause in your loved one’s name

A great way to keep your loved one’s memory alive is to give a donation to a charity in their name. Perhaps it was a charity that helped them or yourself. You could donate a bench or just a money donation, anything will be appreciated. Maybe this year you choose not to send out holiday cards but instead donate the money you would have spent on cards and stamps and donate it to a charity. Local food pantries, homeless shelters, soldiers and their families and nursing homes will really appreciate your gift.

Set a place for them at the dinner table

You don’t have to pretend you aren’t all thinking about them and the empty place on the table. If you think your family would like it, you can set a place for them at the table with a name card and perhaps even their favourite drink. If you want you could also invite someone from your loved one’s past to dinner with you.
