How to Choose a Headstone for Your Loved One

The death of a loved one is a difficult time and it’s important that friends and family find ways to honour and remember the person who’s passed. A headstone is one traditional memorial that remains very popular but how do you choose one that’s right for you?

There are several different headstone options available, including various designs, materials and inscriptions, so read on to find out more.

The design

Most headstones come in one of three traditional designs; upright, flat or kerbed. Upright stones stand at the head of a grave, supported by a thick concrete base. They’re around 45 inches tall and most are rectangular in shape with a gently curved top. Flat headstones are available in a variety of shapes, sizes and designs and they lie flat on the ground at the head of a grave.

A kerbed headstone is the largest and most elaborate design of the three, and features a traditional headstone and a raised curbed surround. The inner area is often filled in with decorative pebbles or gravel, or used to plant flowers.

Which material?

Headstones come in a variety of materials and your choice can depend on personal preference and your budget. Granite is a very popular material as it’s extremely durable and long wearing, although this can make it more expensive. Marble is another popular choice, but signs of dirt and wear and tear will be more noticeable.

Some headstone designs will only be available in specific materials and you’ll also need to check with your burial site before making a decision. Some sites only allow certain materials for headstones, for example, some natural burial grounds only permit stone that hasn’t been quarried from overseas.

Choosing an inscription

This is the most personal decision of all and it will entirely depend on you and your loved one. Many people choose lines from a favourite poem, a quote or a religious verse to inscribe the headstone, alongside the deceased’s name and their birth and death dates. Inscriptions can be carved into the headstone or painted directly onto it and you’ll also need to choose a font size and style.
