Music is considered by many to be a universal language - one that brings people together regardless of age, language and culture. Music holds the power to evoke strong feelings and memories – especially memories of other people. As such, it’s no surprise that it plays an integral role in many funeral services.
Read on as we discuss why music is so important at funerals and how you can choose music to reflect and honour your loved one during their own service.
The Importance of Music in Funeral Services
Music is utilised throughout many funeral ceremonies, serving multiple purposes. Oftentimes, music is used to signify the start and end of a funeral ceremony, welcoming emotion from friends and family and unifying everyone in a way that cannot be done with words alone.
At various points throughout the ceremony, specific song choices may be played to reflect the personal music taste of the deceased, allowing mourners to remember them in a moment of reflection. These choices may have been at the request of the deceased before they departed, or may have been chosen by family members who knew them well and associate specific songs with them.
Deceased individuals aren’t only honoured by friends and family listening to music at their funeral, but by joining together to sing during a funeral. It’s not uncommon for friends and family to be invited to stand and join one another to sing a song - often a hymn - during the ceremony. This is a way to show respect and love for the deceased.
Choosing Music to Reflect Your Loved One
If you’re responsible for planning your loved one’s funeral arrangements, then you may be wondering how you can go about choosing a song that reflects and honours them to include in the service.
Firstly, are there any songs that they requested before their passing? If they had a prepaid funeral plan, perhaps it was listed in this, or maybe they disclosed this to you in person.
If they had no specific requests, then think about the music they would listen to often. Did they have a favourite song, artist, genre? There’s sure to be a song that perfectly represents their tastes.
Of course, you can also pick a song that reminds you of them. This could be a song you heard them play often, or one that was playing during a particularly fond memory you have with them. Chances are, if it reminds you of them, it will evoke fond memories others have with them, too!
